When Weight Gain is the Challenge

Offer Your Child Organic Calories!

Why Go Organic?

Children have higher exposure to many environmental contaminants because they drink more water, eat more food, and breathe more air on a per unit weight basis as compared to adults. Children also metabolize, detoxify, or excrete environmental agents differently than adults.1 Numerous research studies have documented the nutritional superiority of organic foods.2 A recent United Kingdom study found that organic milk can contain up to 60% more antioxidants than found in conventionally produced milk.3 Antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E are molecules that help to prevent damage to the body’s cells. It is reasonable to believe future studies will support theories that the human body must work harder to rid itself of chemicals and hormones used in conventional farming and food manufacturing.

Extra Organic Calories

People with cystic fibrosis generally need to consume 110% to 200% more calories than a typical person of the same size, gender and age. Children can successfully meet extra calorie requirements simply by drinking PediaSmart® as a beverage with meals or a snack between meals. PediaSmart® contains 237 calories per 8 fl oz serving. The average USDA dietary guidelines are based on 2,000 calories per day; so just one serving of PediaSmart® is 12% of a typical 2,000 calorie diet.

Complete Organic Nutrition

Complete nutrition means each serving of PediaSmart® provides all the nutrients needed for a well balanced diet. A cystic fibrosis diet needs to be high in all nutrients including fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Tube Feedings

Some parents are successfully using PediaSmart® for their children’s tube feedings under a healthcare professional’s guidance. We always like to remind parents that unlike ready-to-feed products, powdered formulas are not sterile. Therefore, mixing PediaSmart® should be done with great care regarding cleanliness and sterility of all mixing equipment to avoid any contamination.

Due to the fact that PediaSmart® is not sterile, you should discuss with your child’s healthcare provider the length of time the product can be hung for tube feeding purposes. The recommended hang time for a powdered formula is no longer than 4 hours. Also check with your child’s healthcare provider on use of distilled water to prepare the PediaSmart® for tube feeding purposes or whether it's necessary to boil then cool tap water before mixing the powder.

PediaSmart® is not an isotonic product and when used as a tube feeding, your child’s healthcare provider may suggest starting with a slow drip. The use of a formula that is not isotonic may require attention to tolerance and monitoring of metabolic status.

The above factors need to be taken into account by a healthcare professional if PediaSmart® is to be used as a tube feeding product. As with all enteral feeding practices, we strongly recommend following the Enteral Nutrition Practice Recommendations published on January 27, 2009 by the Enteral Nutrition Practice Recommendations Task Force and the A.S.P.E.N. Board of Directors, a publication used by healthcare professionals to ensure the highest quality of care for those in need of tube feedings. This publication can be found at
