Fructooligosaccharides

Breast milk contains a significant level of prebiotic substances, including oligosaccharides. Baby’s Only Essentials® Probiotic contains the prebiotic Fructooligosaccharide (FOS), which is naturally derived from beet sugar. A prebiotic is a non-digestible food ingredient that beneficially affects the body by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria residing in the intestinal tract.1

FOS is not hydrolyzed or absorbed in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract; it specifically supports the growth of Bifidobacteria in the gut because it is used as a food substance by the Bifidobacteria. FOS also alters the microflora in the gut toward a healthier composition; this is known as the bifidogenic effect. Because FOS is not digested or absorbed in the upper intestinal tract of humans, there is no increase in blood sugar levels and, therefore, FOS can be used by people with diabetes.

Allergen Information

Contains dairy, fish, and wheat.

The Bifidobacteria in Baby’s Only Essentials® Probiotic are grown in appropriate culture media (food to promote growth of the bacteria). The culture media still in use today may be dairy or fish based. However, there is no lactose in Baby’s Only Essentials® Probiotic. This product is lactose-free, galactose-free, and egg-free.

For children with severe allergic responses to dairy products, please consult a healthcare professional before using Baby’s Only Essentials® Probiotic Supplement. Minute traces of cow’s milk protein may be present if the culture medium used was dairy based.

Calcium Phosphate

Calcium phosphate is a natural compound and is used safely in many different ways in the food industry. Calcium phosphate is used in Baby’s Only Essentials® Probiotic to help prevent the powder from clumping and assist in maintaining its flow ability.

Each packet of Baby’s Only Essentials® Probiotic contains 30 mg of Tricalcium phosphate.

Bifidobacterium

Baby’s Only Essentials® Probiotic offers the only probiotic supplement containing three Bifidobacteria meant specifically for infants and toddlers and blended in combination with the prebiotic Fructooligosaccharide (FOS). The use of Bifidobacteria is important because they are the dominant “good” bacteria found in breastfed infants.1,2,3,4,5 In fact, Bifidobacteria make up to 80% to 90% of probiotics in the gastrointestinal tract of breastfed infants. Also the Bifidobacteria used in Baby’s Only Essentials® Probiotic were originally cultured from healthy infants. Each packet contains a minimum of 1 billion of each of the Bifidobacteria described below:

Bifidobacteria longum - Researchers report B. longum has been effective in eliminating harmful nitrates commonly found in foods.*

Bifidobacterium breve - This bacteria is beneficial for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease; helps prevent rotavirus-induced diarrhea and helps maintain a healthy immune system.*

Bifidobacteria infantis - The Journal of Applied Bacteriology reports that B. infantis helps inhibit invasive bacteria such as some strains of E. coli. It is also reported to protect against inflammation of the stomach and bowels (gastroenteritis).*
