- Learn about formula packaging and Bisphenol-A (BPA).
-
The concern with bisphenol-A coatings used in some packaging is the potential migration of bisphenol-A into canned foods. Health concerns related to bisphenol-A have recently been reported because of bisphenol-A’s endocrine-disrupting properties, particularly the estrogen pathway.1 Bisphenol-A is used in the epoxy resin that coats the inside of some metal cans. This coating helps to prevent corrosion of the can, contamination of the canned food from dissolved metals, and bacterial contamination causing spoilage of the food. Thus, the coating helps to maintain the food product’s quality and taste and aids in extending shelf life.
Baby’s Only Organic® formula canisters and re-closeable plastic lids are uncoated and do not contain bisphenol-A. However, the can’s “easy-open” metal top contains an epoxy-based interior coating that may contain trace amounts of unreacted bisphenol-A. It is highly unlikely that any detectable amount of bisphenol-A would migrate from the easy-open top into Baby’s Only Organic® formulas. This is especially true considering there is minimal contact between the powder and the easy-open top during processing and distribution. Once the formula is opened, the easy-open metal top is discarded.
The greater risk of BPA migration has been found to be related to heat exposure during processing.2 BPA migration appears to be most often associated with liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated formulas sold in cans where high processing temperatures are used once the liquid formula is sealed in the can. High temperatures are needed during canning of liquid formulas to achieve product sterility and prevent botulism or the growth of other microorganisms that would lead to spoilage. The presence of high processing temperatures is thought to provoke a migration of the bisphenol-A into liquid formula. The canisters used for Baby’s Only Organic® are NOT hot-filled. Baby’s Only Organic® powder formula cans are filled at room temperature and then vacuum sealed.
As always, Nature’s One® will continue to work with its suppliers to identify the safest packaging and most nutritious ingredients available.
From our investigation on this matter, we have found there are varying conclusions based on the results of many studies. - Is there any concern over the use of SOY and phytoestrogens?
There is little, if no, science to support the many misconceptions that exist today regarding soy. For example, some anti-soy groups claim that diets high in soy are thought to cause attention-deficit disorder or hyperactivity because of the phytoestrogens in soy. Concerns have also been raised about the potential negative effects of phytoestrogens in soy, especially the component of phytoestrogens called isoflavone, on sexual development and reproduction, neurobehavioral development, immune function, and thyroid function in infants. These claims cannot be scientifically substantiated.
In fact, more than 300 foods contain phytoestrogens. These are primarily plant foods such as seeds, grains and beans, including soybeans. Phytoestrogens are found in the protein portion of soybeans. Phytoestrogens consists of several nonsteroidal estrogens, including isoflavones. The moderate consumption of foods containing phytoestrogens is generally a healthy addition to a person’s diet. There is a tremendous amount of good scientific research taking place regarding the benefits of consuming foods containing phytoestrogens.
In 2006, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, U.S. National Institute of Health, convened a meeting of key pediatric nutrition and medical experts to review the use of soy formulas in infancy and addressed many of the concerns about soy and phytoestrogens. This prestigious group concluded, after exhaustive research and reviews of the medical and scientific literature, that soy products, including soy infant formula, are safe to consume at any age and do not present a risk to reproductive or developmental health. The panel called for continued research on the role of soy in human health. The report of this panel can be found at http://cerhr.niehs.nih.gov
Furthermore, a recent clinical report co-authored by the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition and titled, “Use of soy protein-based formulas in infant feeding,” states the following: “In summary, although studied by numerous investigators in various species, there is no conclusive evidence from animal, adult human, or infant populations that dietary soy isoflavones may adversely affect human development, reproduction, or endocrine function.”1
Soy protein formulas have been fed for decades to millions of babies throughout the world. There are many healthy, intelligent adults alive today that were exclusively soy formula fed as infants. Asian and Hispanic groups, known to have high incidents of lactose intolerance, are heavy users of soy formulas and Asians are particularly heavy users of whole soybean foods. Asian and Hispanic groups make up a large percentage of the total world population. If soy formulas created a health disaster, it would be well documented and studied.
Soy formulas have undergone extensive infant biochemistry testing, conducted under medically supervised studies. These studies rely on actual blood plasma tests from the infant participants. This is a critical step that has never been performed by any of the scientists referred to by the anti-soy groups. Of course, this is no surprise since blood plasma tests would not support their anti-soy conclusions.
Baby’s Only Organic® Soy Formula uses whole organic soybeans. Other soy formulas use soy protein isolates made by chemically removing all of the naturally occurring components of the soybean except the protein, manganese, and phytoestrogens. In fact, if an organic soybean was chemically converted into a “soy isolate,” it would no longer qualify as organic. For that reason, Nature’s One® developed a process that naturally achieves the same result while maintaining the nutritional balance and harmony of the soybean as nature intended. We believe this provides balance among all the vitamins and minerals naturally found in our soy formula. Baby’s Only Organic® Soy Formula is not made with genetically modified soybeans. Organic soybeans are farmed using organic farming methods that prohibit the use of chemical fertilizers and insecticides.
The role of soy in human health continues to be scientifically investigated and we constantly monitor the literature to assure that our information is up to date. As new studies and reports become available, we will incorporate these into our literature as well.

- Why use a Soy Formula?
-
There are many reasons that necessitate the use of a soy formula. Often times, parents wish to avoid any animal products in their child's diet. At other times, a cow or goat milk allergy/sensitivity may be present. In those instances, soy formula is utilized and has been proven to be beneficial in supporting proper growth and development in these young children.
Cow Milk allergy or intolerance is a common reason that a health care professional may recommend use of a soy formula. A baby may be allergic to cow milk protein and/or sensitive to cow milk lactose. (It has been clinically evidenced that when a baby demonstrates sensitivity to cow milk based formula, she will most likely also be sensitive to goat milk).
Signs of milk sensitivity or allergy include: excessive fussiness, irritability, excessive spitting-up, gassiness or constipation. Symptoms may also include a "reaction" such as skin rash, eczema, or diarrhea. Some research strongly suggests that a higher incidence of ear infections is also attributable, in part, to cow/goat dairy consumption. If your child is experiencing any or all of these symptoms, a discussion with your health care professional about possible cow/goat milk allergies or sensitivities in your child would be beneficial.

- What about DHA & ARA?
-
There are two basic groupings of fatty acids called (1) essential fatty acids or “precursor fats” (as found in Baby’s Only Organic® pediatric formulas) and (2) non-essential fatty acids which can also be “preformed fats” (as found in Baby’s Only Essentials® DHA and ARA Fatty Acid Supplement*).
Baby’s Only Organic® pediatric formulas contain two essential (precursor) fats: Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) and Linoleic Acid (LA). Alpha-Linolenic and Linoleic fatty acids are called “essential” because the human body cannot make these fats and therefore it is essential to derive them from food sources. Alpha-Linolenic Acid is an omega-3 used by the body to make Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). Linoleic Acid is an omega-6 used by the body to make Arachidonic Acid (ARA). DHA and ARA are called “non-essential” fatty acids because full-term, healthy infants, children, and adults can manufacture these from Alpha-Linolenic and Linoleic fatty acids.
Baby’s Only Essentials® DHA and ARA Fatty Acid Supplement is made with preformed DHA and ARA long-chain fatty acids. This means the fats are already available in their final forms and the body does not need to manufacture from precursor fats, Alpha-Linolenic and Linoleic fatty acids.

- Is Baby’s Only Organic® USDA Certified Organic?
-
Yes, Baby’s Only Organic® Dairy and SOY formula are Certified Organic by OneCert. OneCert is a USDA approved government agency, similar to Quality Assurance International (QAI). For more information about OneCert refer to their website at www.onecert.net. OneCert also complies with the new USDA National Organic Standards Program.
- How does Baby’s Only compare to organic juice?
-
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) announced in the Journal of Pediatrics (May 2001; 107: pp 1210-1213) a warning to parents not to give young infants fruit juice as a means of increasing Vitamin C and water intake. “There is no nutritional indication to feed juice to infants younger than 6 months.” Those parents who give juice to children younger than six months risk undermining their health in the long run.
The AAP attributes child obesity to the excess consumption of calories from beverages. Dental health can also be affected. For infants over 6 months of age, no more than 4 to 6 ounces of juice per day should be fed. Also, to prevent dental caries, juice should be fed from a cup and the infant or toddler should not go to bed with a bottle or be allowed to carry the juice around throughout the day. The committee also recommends parents limit juice intake to just 4-6 ounces per day for children ages 1 year to 6 years old.
Furthermore, too much fruit juice will cause increase risk of diarrhea and stomach pain. In the most acute cases, it can cause malnutrition in infants. Baby's Only Organic® formula is a better choice than juice since it provides vitamins, minerals, protein, essential fatty acids, iron, calcium as well as being a great source of carbohydrates.
- Why is nutritional info in 100 calorie equivalents?
- We use the 100 kcal (1 kcal = 1 Calorie) comparison to provide an "apples to apples" comparison for health care professionals and dietitians. This standard of measurement is also required by the FDA for all infant formulas. Again, it tells a health care professional how much nutrition a baby is getting for every 100 calories consumed. Baby’s Only Organic® formula labels also follow the Nutrition Labeling Education Act (NLEA) format, which is more "consumer friendly." Follow these links to see a 100-calorie comparison table:

- I want to learn more about Organic Soy
- Other non-organic soy formulas use a harsh chemical process to eliminate complex soy sugars that are known to cause discomfort to a baby's developing digestive system. In fact, if an organic soybean was chemically converted into "soy isolate" it would no longer qualify as organic. For that reason, Nature's One® has innovated a process that naturally achieves the same result while maintaining the nutritional balance and harmony of the soybean as nature intended.

Organic Corn Syrup |
Baby’s Only Organic® Toddler Formula uses organic brown rice syrup as its carbohydrate source. Rice is one of the first solid foods fed to a baby, so there is no concern over its use as it is easily tolerated. Baby’s Only Organic® SOY is the only organic non-dairy formula available that does not contain corn syrup and should be used by infants as directed by a healthcare professional.
Carbohydrates are one of the crucial dietary sources of energy that supports the brain, enables muscular contractions, and provides the fuel necessary for a baby’s rapid growth through 24-months of age. So it is important for a child to get plenty of carbohydrates from good sources.
Baby’s Only Organic® source of carbohydrate comes from organic brown rice syrup that requires minimal processing and offers the benefits of slower digestion and absorption of complex sugars that provide a steady supply of energy to a baby. Organic brown rice syrup is a more complex carbohydrate compared to lactose or cane juice as used in other organic formulas. Because organic brown rice syrup requires more time for digestion, it provides a slower and steadier absorption of the carbohydrates into the blood stream and a more constant production of insulin.

Earth’s Best®Soy formula is lower in the essential fatty acid, Linoleic Acid; the Alpha-Linolenic fatty acid composition is not stated on the formula label. These precursor fats are important for the body to convert to DHA & ARA and are critical to brain and eye retina development. In fact, the makers of Similac supported a study1 comparing breast fed infants to three formulas described below:
- A formula containing no added DHA & ARA, but contained higher levels of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid similar to Baby’s Only Organic® Toddler Formula.
- Two formulas supplemented with synthetic DHA and ARA that contained lower levels of linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid.
The results of this study did NOT support adding synthetic DHA & ARA to formula that contained the higher levels of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. However, Nature's One® recognizes that some babies may not be as efficient at converting linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid and recommends supplementation with Baby's Only Essentials® DHA & ARA. The synthetic DHA & ARA used to supplement Earth’s Best® Organic infant formula are treated with hexane solvents, acid and bleach during the manufacturing process.
It is best to compare pediatric formulas using a 100-calorie serving, which is approximately 5-ounces of formula. So over the course of a day of feedings totaling 28oz, a baby consuming Baby’s Only Organic® would receive 784mg MORE linoleic acid when compared to Earth's Best® soy formula. We were unable to obtain information about the levels of alpha-linolenic in Earth's Best's soy formula. Remember, just because a formula is organic does not necessarily insure it is nutritionally advanced. Baby’s Only Organic® takes advantage of modern nutritional science.

Baby’s Only Essentials® DHA & ARA Fatty Acid Supplement is available for parents who would like to take precautionary measures to help ensure their baby has sufficient levels of DHA and ARA. The DHA and ARA in Baby’s Only Essentials® fatty acid supplement are naturally derived from egg phospholipids (egg yolk) using a gentle aqueous (water) process. Egg phospholipids, like those found in Baby’s Only Essentials® DHA & ARA have been used in clinical studies with infants over the past decade. One recent study showed that egg phospholipids are more efficiently absorbed than other sources (fish oil and fungal oil).1 Egg phospholipids contain Choline, an important nutrient needed for the production of neurotransmitters and development of the memory center in the brain. Egg phospholipids also contain cholesterol, used by the body to manufacture Vitamin D, various needed hormones and bile acid. Cholesterol is also an important component in cell membranes. Baby’s Only Essentials® DHA and ARA Fatty Acid Supplement is a well understood and a safe source of DHA and ARA that can be added to Baby’s Only Organic® Toddler Formulas or to foods as a child grows older.
Earth's Best® uses a novel synthetic source of DHA and ARA for their infant formulas. Our company does not like the source or the extraction process for vegetarian fatty acids. The C. cohnii oil (algae) and M. alpina oil (fungus) used in the organic and conventional infant formulas are treated with hexane solvents, acid and bleach.2 We also know that vegetarian sources are a relatively new/novel source of fatty acids and there may be much to learn on the efficacy of these fatty acids. We share some of the same concerns addressed by the FDA when these oils were first submitted for review (FDA report is available upon request). For that reason, Nature's One® developed its DHA & ARA product using egg phospholipid, which has been naturally derived and consumed by humans long before the first "chicken or the egg" riddle was posed.

Some formulas, such as Earth's Best®, the Parents Choice® Wal-Mart® brand, and Enfamil® use palm olein oil as part of the fat blend in their formulas. Palm olein oil is made from palm oil. Unfortunately clinical studies have proven the use of palm olein oil as a predominant fat source in infant formulas causes some babies to poorly absorb calcium resulting in lower bone mineralization.1, 2 When palm olein oil is provided in the formula, calcium soaps (calcium in fat) are formed in the gut. These calcium soaps prevent the absorption of fat and calcium in the gut and can also result in harder stool formation3 or constipation.
Almost 90% of all palm oil is produced in Indonesia and Malaysia at oil-palm plantations. This has resulted in widespread deforestation, destruction of rain forests, and putting the survival of some animals at risk. The razing by burning of tropical rain forests to make way for oil-palm plantations also results in the release of large amounts of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.4
Baby’s Only Organic® Toddler Formulas contain no palm olein oil and no palm oil. Instead, Baby’s Only Organic® formulas contain a blend of organic oils: Organic High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Organic Soybean Oil and Organic Coconut Oil. Baby’s Only Organic® vegetable oils are expeller-pressed, which is a squeezing process to extract the oil from the organic plants. No harsh chemicals are used to produce the vegetable oils.

- Taurine, Selenium & Iron
-
Baby's Only Organic® formulas do contain taurine, selenium and iron, similar to conventional formulas.
Taurine,an amino acid normally present in breast milk, has been shown to play a role in retinal development, among others. Cow and soy milks do not contain adequate amounts of the amino acid.
Selenium is a mineral important for proper formation of red blood cells, development of skeletal muscle and proper growth. Selenium, too, is normally present in breast milk, but lacking in cow and soy milks. Baby's Only Organic® contains added taurine and selenium.
Iron is added at the level recommended by the Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition. Inappropriate dietary iron could result in anemia, weakness, muscle fatigue, abnormal gastrointestinal motility, and a reduction of cognitive ability. This reduction in cognition has been shown to be irreversible, even once a normal iron level is retained.
- Raffinose & Stachyose
- Nature’s One® has a production method that naturally breaks down these two sugars so that they are easily digested. Unlike soy protein isolation processes that chemically strip the soybean of many of its naturally occurring benefits, the process used by Nature’s One® retains the balance of the soymilk as nature intended.
- Whole Soybeans vs Soy Isolates
-
Baby's Only Organic derives its organic soy protein concentrate from the whole soybean. Other formulas use soy protein isolates which chemically removes all the naturally occurring components of the soybean except the protein, manganese and phytoestrogens. Baby's Only Organic® SOY retains the natural benefits of the whole soybean as nature intended. We believe this provides balance among all the vitamins and minerals naturally found in our SOY formula. In fact, at a recent (May, 2007) conference on Diet and Optimal Health sponsored by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, Professor William Helferich stated “when the whole food (referring to the whole soybean) is consumed, you get a very different effect than if you consume the concentrated constituents individually.” He further noted that the whole soybean is healthier than many of its individual components. In other words, the whole soybean provides healthier nutrition than when consuming concentrated components of the soybean, such as phytoestrogens.

- Nucleotides
-
Baby’s Only Organic® Soy Formula does not contain nucleotides. Nutritional science and the medical community have not determined if there are any added benefits for added nucleotides - especially since all are synthetically derived. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition weighs-in on this subject as well commenting that “...additional studies are needed to understand the mechanism of action, confirm clinical endpoints, and monitor the long-term effects of adding nucleotides to infant formula.” 1
Most importantly, nucleotides added to conventional and organic infant formulas are derived by synthetic, non-organic methods. There are presently no organic or natural sources for nucleotides. We are therefore concerned about the harmful effects of the chemicals used to process nucleotides and the synthetic source of nucleotides; especially since the benefits of their addition have not been clearly demonstrated. 1.
